Geneva Auto Show: Audi A8 Hybrid concept

Audi calls the A8 Hybrid “a near-production concept,” which means if you put your ear to the tracks, you can probably hear that train approaching. It is equipped with Audi’s fully developed turbocharged, direct-injection 2-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine, linked to a 33-kilowatt electric motor (or 44 horsepower) via a wet clutch. The A8 Hybrid makes combined power equivalent to 245 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque, which is good for a zero-to-60 mile per hour time of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 146 miles per hour. Conversely, it is also capable of sipping fuel at rate of just 38 miles per gallon. It can also travel on electric power alone, at speeds up to 40 miles per hour, for about a mile and a half.
As classy as any A8. When Audi decides to green light it for production, what price will it carry? Nobody at Audi is saying, but a premium of $20,000 above the price of a regular A8 probably wouldn’t be out of the ballpark.
